Boombox v2 is a next-generation automated behavioral response system designed for playback experiments in modern behavioral ecology research, as well as non-lethal deterrence and behavioral modification for human-wildlife coexistence. Building on the proven foundations of the original Boombox, Boombox v2 expands far beyond sound enabling fully integrated multi-modal playback experiments that combine audio with other sensory stimuli such as smell, motion, or visual cues in a single, rugged platform.
At its core, Boombox v2 supports MP3 or WAV based audio playback, with capacity for up to 20 minutes of total playback audio per audio module. Loading sounds is simple and intuitive - just drag and drop files, no proprietary software required. An onboard clock and calendar enable time-based playlists and precisely scheduled playback events, allowing experiments to switch between daytime/nighttime playlists, daily playlists, or schedule time-based events without manual intervention.
Boombox v2 is designed to integrate seamlessly with camera traps as well as other sensors. A dedicated camera input trigger allows playback events to be initiated by motion detections on a camera trap, making it ideal for automated audio playback experiments. Playback events, timestamps, selected sounds, and associated metadata can be logged to the MicroSD card for data collection and later analysis.
Unlike the original Boombox, Boombox v2 is purpose-built for multi-modal stimuli. Two auxiliary ports support external accessories such as scent dispensers, mechanical actuators, lights, or visual displays, enabling researchers to explore complex sensory interactions rather than sound alone.
Housed in an IP65-rated industrial waterproof enclosure, Boombox v2 is engineered for reliable operation in harsh outdoor environments. Each unit ships complete with two speakers, speaker cables, and a camera interface cable, providing a ready-to-deploy solution for rigorous, repeatable, and scalable field experiments.
